What is Advanced Placement (AP)

West Hill CI is proud to offer Pre-AP and AP (Advanced Placement) courses for students in grades 10 through 12. Courses offered in Grade 10 and 11 are considered Pre-AP, while the Grade 12 courses are AP. The Pre-AP/AP program is an enrichment program for academically motivated and accomplished students. Developed and administered by the College Board in the United States, AP prepares students for entry into universities around the world.

West Hill students can select Pre-AP English, Math and/or Science for their Grade 10 year. The Pre-AP and AP program is an academically rigorous one, requiring students to learn at a very fast pace. While in the Grade 10 and 11 Pre-AP courses, students complete reach-ahead curriculum. Once in the Grade 12 AP course, students complete the Grade 12 Ontario curriculum in addition to the first year university curriculum. AP students have the option of writing one (or multiple) standardized AP exams in the spring of their Grade 12 year, although students do not have to write the standardized exam as part of their final mark in the course.

Performing well on the standardized AP exams can earn students credit for first year university courses in Ontario and around the globe. Research shows that students who are successful in AP typically experience greater academic success in university than those who do not participate in AP.

Why AP?

AP is based on a North American curriculum which is preferred by Ontario Universities. AP allows students the flexibility of taking one or more enrichment courses individually, therefore allowing students to excel in areas of particular interest to them.
